“I fell down a flight of stairs.”

That’s the story that Bishop Donald E. Pelotte, formerly of the Diocese of Gallup, has been telling for the past year–he was injured when he tripped down a flight of stairs. Then the police photos came out. Now he admits, when confronted by a reporter, that the story was ridiculous–there’s no way his injuries could have been caused by a fall. But now he claims he doesn’t remember what happened. The police, despite the evidence, chose to believe the chancery lies. Neither Pelotte nor the Gallup police want to find out what really happened.

  1. Anyone who has worked in an emergency room as a nurse, doctor or chaplain has heard the “walked into a door explanation before”, I would never cast aspersions on anyone but …

  2. I agree with Liam. I’ve heard the “walked into the door” and the “fell down the stairs” explanations many times before. The injuries in the pictures are NOT from a fall down the stairs.

I also don’t understand how one person got such a severely injured person down the stairs and into a car and then drove them to the hospital. That’s what 911 is for. You get a nice safe ride to the hospital in an ambulance and the risk of further injury (broken neck, worse brain trauma, etc.) is minimized.

The story hasn’t made sense from the day it happened. If the Diocese had chosen to be completely forthright in dealing with whatever happened it wouldn’t be a story today. But it is and our Diocese is still scandalized and being talked about a year later.

Although I pray for Bishop Pelotte’s health, I pray more for the souls of those persons who chose to hide the truth. They can hide it from us but not from God.
