Christians and Yoga

Should Christians practice yoga? Is it merely a physical exercise, capable of being divorced from Hindu faith? Albert Mohler got a lot of people upset for his answer to these questions. I think he’s right. I think lots of Hindus would agree with him.

  1. Perhaps the problem is defining “yoga”. Are you just doing the stretches and poses, or all the prayers, etc.? Are you holding the poses for a long time, or moving quickly from one to the next?

I say this because my wife has been been doing “yoga” classes 3 times a week since summer started, but they don’t do any prayers/chanting, and they don’t hold the poses for any more than 5-10 seconds. It’s really just an aerobic workout, much like she did when she was a dancer.

I wonder if a Hindu would define that as “yoga”.

Is holding a demi-plie also dangerous to the spirit? Or is it just a body pose?

In any case, she certainly isn’t feeling more “eastern”; she’s still very much Catholic.
