New English Mass Translation

The Vatican has announced that the new English translation of the Roman Missal will be implemented in Advent 2011. GetReligion looks at coverage of the story. See also the USCCB page, especially the Order of Mass. It’s a more literal translation, with both the imagery (and the theology of sacrifice) much clearer than in the dumbed down version used since Vatican 2.

One of the consequences of this retranslation is that all the musical settings of the mass that Catholics have become accustomed to will no longer be able to be used (at least officially). Look for a plethora of new settings and new hymnals in the months to come.

More than a consequence, its a blessing! Maybe finally we will begin to hear some music that better reflects the historic Christian and catholic tradition.

I want to tear my hair out when the Gloria is butchered by rendering it a folksy chorus “Glory to God in the highest! Sing glory to God!”.

    • Personally, I never understood the point of turning the Gloria into something where the congregation sings only a refrain.
