Happy George Washington’s Birthday! That’s the name of the federal holiday that’s celebrated today.

Some states, including Texas, have opted to call the state holiday something else. Texas calls it President’s Day–Singular possessive.

Merchants, never much interested in either history or grammar, have called it “Presidents’ Day,” because they like all the presidents … as long as they have green-hued faces.

  1. It was always my impression that Presidents’ Day was a celebration of George Washington AND Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. Hence, back when I was 8 or 9 years old, Sugar Bush ski mountain in Vermont offered any school child a free lift ticket on Presidents’ Day if he/she could recite the Gettysburg Address. Our Pathfinder club went and, though I didn’t master it, my sister did.
