Darwin’s 200th Birthday

It’s Lincoln’s Birthday today–his 200th–an anniversary he shares with Charles Darwin. The one man fought for men to be free, the other, enslaved us to scientific determinism. The Biblical text by which we might remember Lincoln would be Leviticus 25:10.

For Darwin:

(Rev. 14:6-7) And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

That last part is an allusion to Exodus 20: the only other place where God is identified specifically as creator of “heaven, earth, and sea”:

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

The Sabbath is inseparably linked with creation. It is its eternal sign. Forget it, and you will likely forget the creator.

And what about the “fountains of waters”? Another allusion, this time to Genesis 7:11, where the “fountains of the deep” were opened up and brought on the flood.

Revelation 14:6-7 is God’s last warning message. Remember the flood. Remember the Creator. Worship him. Judgment is coming.

It echoes 2 Peter 3:3ff–

Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: but the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
