The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will release its latest draft sex statement on February 19 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (I wonder how this will work, since daylight savings time will not be in effect).
It seems they’ve been at this since the formation of the ELCA on January 1, 1988. The first big blow up came with the release of Human Sexuality and the Christian Faith in 1991. I responded with a paper that was published as the editorial in the Pentcost 1992 edition of Lutheran Forum. Those who have wanted to change the church’s teaching have been patient. They’ve kept at task, wearing away the opposition, changing the rules of the debate each go round. One wonders what the path of the church might have been if it had put that time and energy and money to a different use.
