Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston Settles Sex Abuse Case

The Houston Chronicle reports that a settlement has been reached between the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and the victims of seminarian Juan Carlos Patino Arango.

Meanwhile, demonstrators were recently protesting outside the cathedral against the archdiocese’s handling of accusations against Fr. Stephen Horn.

  1. I would have to say that the archdiocese removed Fr. Horn immediately in November, although they didn’t announce the reason until January. In that regard, they did minimize the risk to others as soon as they realized the potential. It wasn’t until Jan, however, that the review board found the allegations to be of merit.

    I am fairly sure that the statute of limitations has passed on the alleged crime- therefore the archdiocese did not need to report the allegations to law enforcement.

    As for the settlement-The archdiocese would not want Fiorenza or Pickard, both retired, but still active within the archdiocese, to have to testify. Hence, a willingness to settle.
