Orthodoxy and the Pope

Will there be a reunion between Catholicism and Orthodoxy? Not if the Russian Orthodox can help it, especially when considering the role of the pope. Paul McCain has link to ENI story. Now Rome agrees the Orthodox are apostolic and have a legitimate hierarchy. And the Orthodox and the non-Chalcedonian churches of Egypt and Assyria are agreed that the idea of an infallible papacy with universal jurisdiction is a medieval Roman invention that was unknown in the patristic period. But Rome insists that the papacy is not simply for the bene esse of the Church, but of its esse (as Bernard Law expressed it to me once). It isn’t likely that either will give on this point, as the article underscores.
