Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!

Herod the Great’s tomb has been found in the ruins of the Herodium. Like many royal tombs of the ancient world, it was desecrated not terribly long after his death. A monument to his glory became a monument instead to his humanity–“for dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
