Medjugorje

And now let us say some thankful words to Catholic traditionalists. Yes, sometimes they are a conspiratorial bunch, but as wise folks have said, “Just because you’re paranoid it doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you.”

There’s one area where the traditionalists have been very vigilant and have done all Christians a great favor–and that is in their tenacious criticism of Medjugorje.

Here are two examples.

Now, to be even-handed, let me also acknowledge that the extreme left, represented by the National Catholic Reporter, have also made a valuable contribution to this discussion:

  1. Plus I think Donal Foley’s book on Medjugorje should be required reading on this subject since it really covers the subject looking at both the historical context and the massive disobedience involved.

Though no one should need to go farther than the fact that their Bishop ordered them last year to stop publishing messages and of course no such thing has happened.

I think the silliest tidbits are that one of the so-called seers said that Mary told her to read the poem of the man-god or that the first “apparitions” came after they had stolen some cigarettes and went off to smoke them and listen to music.

  2. I still owe Donal a review (mea culpa!!), but I didn’t want to lump him in with the traditionalists and the liberals. 🙂
