“The Greg” apologizes to Adventist scholar

Gianfranco Ghirlanda, the Rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University, has apologized to Samuele Bacchiocchi, a Seventh-day Adventist alumnus of that institution, following defamatory statements made by the General Secretary, Barbara Bergami. Details in his latest newsletter (scroll down). More details forthcoming.

Bacchiocchi concludes:

I would like to express my gratitude to Rector Ghirlanda for taking time to examine my response and rectify some of the false allegations. Though some allegations still remain unresolved, in the spirit of Christian forgiveness I consider the case closed.

Stephen Korsman and Jared Olar, who carried forward an investigation of Bacchiocchi over this issue, have apologized on Stephen’s blog, and offered prayers for his health. A good ending all around.

  1. Yes, I am glad this matter has been resolved. It’s a shame, and a real embarrassment to the Gregorian and to the Church, that the 2004 letter contained so many inaccuracies damaging to Dr. Bacchiocchi’s reputation. I had always suspended judgment in those matters until clarification could be obtained — except, that is, in the matter of the imprimatur, where it appeared to be clear that something was amiss there.

There is one good thing that has come out of this, and that’s the clarification of the matter of the imprimatur (or imprimi potest) allegedly given to “From Sabbath to Sunday.” But it’s very regrettable and unfortunate that this information was acquired in the context of reckless and false statements about Dr. Bacchiocchi’s credentials and achievements.
