When the phone rings at midnight, it’s never good news–especially when you are a pastor. So when the phone rang at close to midnight last night, I awoke with a start and my heart started beating fast. Sometimes it’s a wrong number from someone whose drunken fingers can’t hit the keys. But I think first, if my family is out of town (as my son is this weekend), “Is everyone OK?” Then I wonder, “Is someone dead?” But last night’s phone call was from a reporter from a western newspaper. He started out by apologizing for calling so late, but the phone conversation didn’t go any further. My emotions shifted quickly from expectation of bad news to surprise that someone would call me that late for a non emergency. I pointed out that it was nearly midnight, and I was in bed. It was some minutes after I hung up that I wondered what he might have been calling about.

Hey! At least you are not the first female president getting phone calls at 3 am!
