Tonight I was back at my former parish, St. Theresa’s in Sugar Land, for the first time in over a year. The occasion: an organ concert by Dr. Gregory Hamilton, performing works of J. S. Bach, Cesar Franck, Dom Paul Benoit, et al. Alan had mentioned it, so I figured it would be a good opportunity to bump into him, as well–and I was right.
The renovation of St. Theresa’s wasn’t quite finished when I was there last, and the organ had not yet been installed (it was purchased from Christ Church, Cambridge, MA).
Dr. Hamilton gave a virtuoso performance, in a concert designed to highlight the symphonic quality of the instrument–but it also showcased his own ability with a wide range of music, from rather simple, chant-based tunes to the complexity of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. He truly pulled out all stops (literally and metaphorically).
These concerts are offered on the First Friday of each month–this was the first I was able to attend. If you’re in the neighborhood, be sure to check them out. It’s a gift that the parish provides to the entire community, and it needs to be better known.
