Vatican Official on SSPX and “Motu Proprio”

Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos has reiterated that no priest needs to seek permission to celebrate the traditional Latin mass. This is a slap in the face of all those bishops who sought to impose restrictions on it.

Also, he has underscored that only four bishops of the SSPX were excommunicated–not the priests or the lay Catholics who attend mass at their churches.

The path is clear for a Traditionalist resurgence.

  • “This is a slap in the face of all those bishops who sought to impose restrictions on it.”

Well, the MP left very little room for restrictions to begin with, so what exactly were these bishops doing to begin with?

  • They were asserting their own perceived authority, of course.

  • The key word in this instance is “perceived”, of course… not that I’m telling you anything you don’t already know, but bishops aren’t free to do whatever they feel like doing. In this instance, they lacked authority to make restrictions beyond a certain point, so any assertion of authority in this instance would be erroneous.

  • Precisely. But such intervention by Rome is so rare, and normally they do what they want (e.g., Mahony), and so many of them are used to acting as they wish.
