Marcial Maciel Dead at 87

January 31, 2008 · 11 Comments

Fr. Marcial Maciel, the founder of the Legion of Christ, has died. Accusations of drug misuse and sexual abuse had dogged him for decades; the latter finally resulted in his removal by Pope Benedict XVI. Rod Dreher reports.

Although I hold no grudge against Marciel Maciel, after 14 years in the Legion, I will not dignify him with the title of “Father” or “Reverend”.

I hope God has mercy on his soul and that the cult methods die with him. The LC is suing Regain trying to harass, intimidate, bankrupt and shut them up.

xLC, i’ve seen that verbatim comment now at various blogs reporting this; thanks but no thanks for Regain’s opinion on the matter–now quit trolling.

There’s only one moderator on this blog, thank you. And ReGain’s opinion is welcome. They represent people who have been hurt by the structure and methods of the LC. I know folks who have had positive experiences, but Regain shouldn’t be shut up or shouted down, especially in light of the validation of their criticisms by the Vatican’s removal of Maciel.

Thanks, Bill; we don’t own a news agency or newspaper, so blog comment boxes are one of few places we have, to get our point of view out.

But, Glenn and xLC? I know you’re under a lot of stress with the lawsuit and all, but Jon has a good point. How about some different sentences in comboxes?

Since you didn’t mention the ReGain webpage — I will: http://www.regainnetwork.org/

He was a truly great man and will be canonized a saint in my lifetime!!!! Dominus vobiscum!

  • Bill // February 19, 2008 at 4:39 pm

The evidence suggests otherwise. That’s why the Vatican removed him.

Thanks for your attention, Bill. I think that your point of view on matters like this is great. Catholics are not the only ones affected by the Maciel and Legion business. All people of good faith are.

I apologize for copying a comment on a FEW blogs, no more than three or four. It was a busy time for the ReGAIN group to get information out and I occaisionally have a point that I really want to get across. I am not really smart enough to have a different point for every blog that I find that reports on an important event. God bless those who do have such intellectual capacity!
