Hiker Dies of Thirst with Water All Around. His hiking companions had water, but they wanted Dave Buschow to tough it out and find it on his own. They stood by and watched him die of thirst in the hot desert and wouldn’t offer him any water. It was a “survival course,” they say; he knew the risks, he waived their liability.

But survival is never a solitary act. You need others. You need to look out for others. But no one looked out for Dave Buschow–and no one is prosecuting those who had water who didn’t give it to him.
